Sri Lanka Power Cut Today: October 20–21, 2026 Schedule, Groups & Norochcholai Update
One-hour power cuts are expected to continue across Sri Lanka today, Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as the national electricity system continues to operate with reduced generation following the shutdown of the Lakvijaya Power Station at Norochcholai.
However, there is an important positive development today. The National System Operator (NSO) says one generator at Norochcholai is scheduled to be reconnected to the national grid today, adding around 300 MW of generation capacity.
October 21 is also the final day covered by the currently approved three-day power cut programme. As of this morning, no power cut schedule has been officially announced for October 22.
Sri Lanka Power Cut Schedule Today – October 21
The approved schedule for Wednesday, October 21 divides the country into four groups.
| Group | Power Cut Starts | Expected Restoration |
|---|---|---|
| Group 3 | Between 4:30 PM – 5:00 PM | Between 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM |
| Group 4 | Between 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM | Between 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM |
| Group 1 | Between 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM | Between 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM |
| Group 2 | Between 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM | Between 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM |
Each group faces an interruption of approximately one hour.
The exact time can vary by around 30 minutes depending on electricity demand, available generation capacity and weather conditions.
Authorities have also stated that the cuts are implemented if demand management is required. Therefore, a scheduled area may not necessarily experience a cut if sufficient generation is available.
The three-day schedule approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka covers October 19, 20 and 21.

Norochcholai Update Today: 300 MW Expected to Return
The most important development on October 21 is the expected return of one generator at the Lakvijaya Power Station.
According to the National System Operator, one Norochcholai generating unit is scheduled to be reconnected to the national grid today.
The unit is expected to provide approximately 300 MW of additional electricity generation capacity.

This would significantly reduce the generation shortage that led to the temporary power cuts.
However, consumers should note that the planned reconnection of one generator does not mean that the entire Norochcholai power station will immediately return to full operation.
The Lakvijaya Power Station has three main generating units, and the recent shutdown removed approximately 810 MW of available generation from the national system.
Will There Be a Power Cut Tomorrow – October 22?
As of the morning of October 21, 2026, there is no confirmed nationwide power cut schedule for Thursday, October 22.
The programme approved by PUCSL covers only:
- October 19
- October 20
- October 21
Therefore, today is currently the last scheduled day of the three-day demand-management programme.
The expected addition of around 300 MW from Norochcholai today should improve the electricity supply situation.
However, it would be too early to guarantee that there will be no further power cuts.
Whether additional cuts are necessary will depend on factors such as:
- Whether the Norochcholai generator is successfully reconnected
- How much generation capacity is available during the evening peak
- Electricity demand
- Hydropower availability
- The status of the remaining Norochcholai units
If another power cut programme is required from October 22, authorities would need to announce a new schedule.
Why Are There Power Cuts in Sri Lanka Now?
The current power cuts followed the islandwide electricity failure on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Following the system failure, the Lakvijaya coal-fired power station at Norochcholai was taken offline as part of the power system’s safety and restoration procedures.
The National System Operator subsequently said the plant would remain disconnected for several days while the necessary procedures were completed.
As a result, approximately 810 MW of generation capacity became unavailable.
With less generation available during periods of high electricity demand, temporary one-hour power cuts were introduced to help maintain the balance between electricity generation and consumption.

What Caused the October 17 Islandwide Blackout?
There has been considerable discussion about what caused the nationwide blackout, and some early reports have offered different explanations.
According to information presented by the National System Operator during subsequent briefings, the output of Generator No. 1 at Norochcholai suddenly dropped sharply at around 11:43 AM on October 17.
However, identifying the initial disturbance is only part of the issue.
The wider question is why that disturbance developed into a failure of the entire national electricity system.
The NSO launched an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events that resulted in the islandwide blackout.

Consumers should therefore be cautious about treating claims circulating online about a single cause as the final conclusion until the technical investigation is completed.
Was Poor-Quality Coal Responsible?
There have also been claims that the problems at Norochcholai were related to the quality of coal used at the plant.
The Government has rejected the claim that substandard coal caused the current failure.
Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said on October 20 that the coal currently being used was from newer shipments and rejected a connection between coal quality and the incident.
The technical investigation into the wider blackout and the power plant issue is separate from these political and public claims.
