Understanding the estimate

How EPF and ETF are calculated

This calculator uses the statutory minimum contribution rates published by Sri Lankan authorities. EPF receives a combined 20% of monthly gross earnings, while ETF adds a separate employer-funded 3%.

Employee EPFTotal earnings × 8%
Employer EPFTotal earnings × 12%
Employer ETFTotal earnings × 3%

Which earnings should you enter?

Use monthly total earnings rather than basic salary alone. Depending on the payment, qualifying earnings can include salary or wages, cost-of-living and similar allowances, holiday payments, food allowances, commissions, piece-rate payments and other remuneration covered by the applicable rules.

If your earnings change each month, calculate each month separately for the most useful estimate.

EPF and ETF example for Rs. 100,000 monthly earnings

For qualifying monthly earnings of Rs. 100,000, the employee EPF estimate is Rs. 8,000 and the employer EPF estimate is Rs. 12,000. The employer also contributes an estimated Rs. 3,000 to ETF. EPF therefore receives Rs. 20,000, while the employer-funded amount across EPF and ETF is Rs. 15,000.

Common EPF and ETF questions

Is ETF deducted from the employee’s salary?

No. The standard ETF contribution is paid by the employer in addition to the employee’s earnings. The employee EPF contribution is the amount normally deducted from qualifying earnings.

Should I use basic salary or gross earnings?

Use the qualifying total earnings on which contributions are payable, not take-home pay after deductions. Ask the employer or relevant authority when you are uncertain whether a particular allowance or payment is included.
